Coronavirus updates: Here’s what to know in Bradenton and Manatee County on June 11

The latest on the COVID-19 pandemic in Bradenton and Manatee County.

One more death in Manatee County. Toll hits 112

Sixteen people in Manatee County are among the nearly 1,400 new cases of people across the state who have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the latest data released by the Florida Department of Health on Wednesday.

Another Manatee County resident has also died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. That death is among 36 new deaths reported on Wednesday by the health department.

A total of 112 people have now died from COVID-19 in Manatee County.

In all, 1,245 people in Manatee County have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Masks available for homeless people in Bradenton

The Florida Department of Health in Manatee County delivered 500 cloth masks to Turning Points this week to be distributed to staff, volunteers and the homeless community.

Retiring Turning Points Executive Director Adell Erozer said the donation is important to the agency’s mission of protecting the vulnerable population.

“Working in partnership with the health department, we assist our neighbors in need in becoming healthy, housed and sustainable,” Erozer said. “Distributing face masks to our most vulnerable populations and teaching them the importance of wearing them during the pandemic is done with our shared mission in mind.”

Food pantries in Manatee County

As COVID-19 has ravaged Manatee County and employers have shedded jobs, food security has become a bigger issue for many residents.

Manatee County government this week released a list of food pantries in the county where residents can obtain free food and other assistance.

ORGANIZATIONS OFFERING HELP

Resources are available to help struggling Manatee County residents through the COVID-19 pandemic. Opportunities also exist to support local relief efforts, which are facing a sudden and overwhelming demand.

With all schools closed through May 1, area students might struggle to find their daily lunch, and parents may need child care while they continue working. Other residents are losing work hours or jobs with the restrictions placed on restaurants and bars.
