Another 16 people test positive for coronavirus in Manatee County. One more resident dies

Sixteen people in Manatee County are among the nearly 1,400 new cases of people across the state who have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the latest data released by the Florida Department of Health on Wednesday.

Another Manatee County resident has also died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. That death is among 36 new deaths reported on Wednesday by the health department.

A total of 112 people have now died from COVID-19 in Manatee County. The statewide death toll now stands at 2,801 with deaths also reported in Broward, Miami-Dade, Desoto, Hamilton, Hillsborough, Lee, Leon, Monroe, Orange, Palm, Beach, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties.

There are now 1,245 people who have tested positive locally since the first cases was reported in March. Statewide, the cumulative total of cases is now 67,371, with the latest 1,371 cases.

The latest local positive cases were among 464 test results that were released by FDOH, with a positive rate of 3.4%. Overall, Manatee County’s positive rate now stands at 5.1% with 24,175 people who have been tested.

Testing continues to become more available with the opening of a walk-up testing site in the parking lot of the Home Depot at 2350 Cortez Road W., Bradenton. The site was initially set to open on Tuesday but didn’t because of a delay in delivering supplies.

The testing site is one of three open in the state as part of a joint effort between the Florida Department of Emergency Management, Home Depot and Quest Diagnostics.

Only a handful of people were tested when the site first opened.

Sarasota County had 11 new cases reported on Wednesday, raising the county’s total to 705. Two more people have died from COVID-19 in Sarasota, with the death toll now at 88.

In Hillsborough County, there were 104 new cases reported, making a total of 3,027 people who have tested positive for the virus. One more death raised the death toll to 94.

Pinellas County now has 1,746 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus, with 67 new cases reported. The county also had one new death reported, raising the death toll to 100.
