A second Aldi supermarket is planned for Lakewood Ranch, according to paperwork filed with Manatee County Building Services.

Unlike the first one —which is on the Sarasota side of the Ranch — the new Aldi would be in Manatee County along Crossland Trail, north of State Road 70 and east of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard.

Aldi has been aggressively growing its discount brand in Manatee County and across the nation.

Aldi opened its first Bradenton store in 2010 at 4705 Cortez Road W. Since then, it has opened stores at 4525 53rd Ave. E., 5715 14th St. W., 8580 Heritage Green Way and 605 Tenth St. W., Palmetto.

Aldi also has a store under construction in the Creekwood Commons shopping center in Parrish.

The Lakewood Ranch Aldi at 7214 University Parkway was one of the most recent to open in the Bradenton-Sarasota area.

With its rapid growth, the Bradenton area has been attractive to grocers.

Detwiler’s Farm Market announced this week that it had signed a lease for 50,000-square-feet of anchor space in Marketplace West in the 3500 block of 53rd Avenue West.

The planned store would be Detwiler’s second in Manatee County and the sixth overall.

A new entrant in the Bradenton market, Sprouts Farmers Market, confirmed recently that it would open its first store in the area in the third quarter of 2023.

Sprouts is planned for the Cortez Plaza at 1205 Cortez Road W. at 14th Street West, one of the busiest intersections in Manatee County.

Also planned for Cortez Road is a national grocery chain store at Cortez Commons shopping center at the intersection of 59th Street and Cortez Road.

The identify of the grocer has not been announced, but would join Big Lots and Tuesday Morning as anchors of the shopping center.

Aldi was founded in 1961 in Germany by the Albrecht Family and opened its first U.S. Aldi store in 1976.

Aldi now has more than 2,000 stores across 36 states with over 25,000 employees, according to the company website.
