Coronavirus updates: Here’s what to know in Bradenton and Manatee County on Sept. 24

The latest on the COVID-19 pandemic in Bradenton and Manatee County.

Four more COVID-19 deaths reported in Manatee County

COVID-19 has killed four more Manatee County residents, according to the Florida Department of Health. They were among 202 new deaths reported Wednesday by the Florida Department of Health.

In Manatee County, the official COVID-19 death toll is up to 282. Statewide, 13,618 residents have died.

The latest victims locally were a 92-year-old woman, a 61-year-old man, a 58-year-old woman and a 80-year-old woman. One of the four victims either lived or worked at a local long-term care facility.

There were also 48 new coronavirus infections reported in Manatee by the health department. In total, there have been 11,327 people who have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic got underway.

Statewide, there were 2,590 new positive cases announced on Wednesday. A total of 690,499 people have been infected in Florida.

COVID-19 case at Manatee County elementary school sends dozens into quarantine

The School District of Manatee County reported two COVID-19 cases with big differences in Tuesday’s update.

Daughtrey Elementary School, 515 63rd Ave. E. in Bradenton, reported its first case since classes began last month. There were no exposures to the one employee who tested positive for COVID-19, according to the district report.

The impact was greater at Palmetto Elementary School, 1540 10th St. W., where 27 people were quarantined after exposure to one student who tested positive for COVID-19. Before the recent update, Palmetto Elementary had recorded two cases and five exposures between reports on Aug. 25 and Sep. 14.

When people are exposed to COVID-19, meaning they stayed within six feet of an infected person for more than 15 minutes, the exposed employees and students are forced to quarantine for 14 days.

FOOD PANTRIES IN MANATEE COUNTY

As COVID-19 has ravaged Manatee County and employers have shedded jobs, food security has become a bigger issue for many residents.
