New McDonald’s planned for Palmetto, records say. What to know

McDonald’s is planning a new restaurant in a growing Manatee County area.

The fast food giant recently filed plans with the county’s Development Services for a nearly 3,900-square-foot restaurant off Moccasin Wallow Road near Interstate 75.

The proposed McDonald’s is part of the Robinson Gateway development area, which received county approval in 2023, according to development records.

Chase Bank, Home Depot, BayCare Hospital and an apartment complex called The Carlton at Robinson Gateway are planned near the McDonald’s.

Third McDonald’s for Palmetto area

Recently, McDonald’s rebuilt and reopened its store at 699 10th St. E. in Palmetto, and the company has a store off U.S. 41 and 69th St. E.

According to building records, the McDonald’s planned for Moccasin Wallow would start construction in April 2026 and be completed by the end of 2026.

How did McDonald’s begin?

McDonald’s was founded in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant with a drive-thru and car hop service. Dick and Mac McDonald opened that restaurant in San Bernardino, California.

By 1948, the McDonald brothers changed the restaurant to a self-service drive-in with a nine-item menu featuring a 15-cent hamburger, according to company history.

In 1954, Ray Kroc visited the restaurant and franchised the first McDonald’s a year later. He bought the company from the brothers in 1961 for $2.7 million, according to company history.

Currently, there are more than 38,000 locations in six different continents.
