Man knocks on wrong door, then 73-year-old shoots him dead, Virginia officials say
A Virginia man was fatally shot after knocking on an apartment unit one door away from his intended address, officials said.
Now, 74-year-old Leroy King is convicted of second-degree murder in his death, according to a Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office news release.
According to the April 2 release, Albert Johnson, 38, was planning to visit King’s neighbor June 20, 2023, when he mistakenly knocked on his door instead.
After Johnson knocked a second time later that same day, King came out of his apartment, yelled at Johnson and fired two rounds at his neck and torso, officials said.
Johnson died at the scene from his injuries, according to the release.
King was arrested shortly after and charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of murder, officials said. He was 73 at the time, according to WVEC.
Although King pleaded not guilty to his charges, a jury convicted him April 2, officials said.
He is set to be sentenced July 11, according to officials.
Johnson loved hip-hop and rap and was known for bringing “laughter and joy” into the lives of those who knew him, according to an online obituary.
“His family is deeply saddened by his sudden death,” the obituary said.
