A pregnant woman awakened by a noise shortly after midnight discovered an intruder in her home, California police reported.

The woman screamed before the stranger struck her in the head with a flashlight in the incident at about 1 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, San Rafael police said in a news release.

The woman’s husband heard her screams and fought with the man, throwing him out of the house and down some patio stairs, police said.

During the fight, the man bit the husband on the hand, police said. Once outside, he ran away and police could not find him. Officers said he had entered the home through the back door.

A few hours later, the man showed up at a skilled nursing facility posing as a driver for a transport service and tried to kidnap a patient, police said.

Workers demanded his credentials but the man could not provide them, police said. They notified police and he left the facility.

Two nurses who trailed him as he left the facility told police where to find him and he was arrested, police said.

David Jonathan Margoliash, 48, of San Rafael, faces scharges of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and attempted kidnapping, police said.

Officers said Margoliash has an “extensive history” with police and has been arrested for several violent crimes in the past.

Detectives ask anyone with information on the case to call 415-485-3000.

San Rafael is about a 20-mile drive north from San Francisco.
