Bradenton man arrested in Georgia months after fatal shooting, deputies say
A Bradenton man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that killed one man and injured another was arrested Tuesday after nearly four months on the run, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Maurice McCary, 35, was arrested in Albany, Georgia, after local law enforcement received a tip about his location, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators said they found McCary hiding under a bed before taking him into custody.
McCary was wanted on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the March 8 shooting that killed Jamari Murray-Barnes, 27, and injured a 22-year-old, according to the sheriff’s office.
He will be extradited to Manatee County at a later time, deputies said.
Investigators say Murray-Barnes and the 22-year-old were stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of 14th Street West and 53rd Avenue West in Bradenton when McCary pulled alongside their vehicle and fired multiple shots into the car.
Murray-Barnes died at the scene, while the 22-year-old was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to the sheriff’s office.
Detectives previously said they believe the shooting began with a confrontation between the men at a local bar two days earlier.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest warrant for McCary a few days after the shooting and later partnered with the Gold Star Club of Manatee County to increase the reward for information leading to his arrest to $14,500.
Additional charges related to the shooting are expected, according to the sheriff’s office.
