Coronavirus updates: Here’s what to know in Bradenton and Manatee County on Sept. 23

The latest on the COVID-19 pandemic in Bradenton and Manatee County.

Another COVID-19 death in Manatee County

Manatee County saw 31 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 among residents, the Florida Department of Health said Monday.. They were among 1,685 new cases reported statewide.

Statewide, it was the smallest number of new cases announced since June 10, when 1,371 were reported.

Florida’s total case count since testing began now stands at 685,439. Another 21 Florida residents have died from the coronavirus, according to the state health department, which brings the statewide death toll to 13,317 residents and 163 non-residents.

In Manatee County, there have been 11,241 reported cases of COVID-19. Deaths remained at 277 on Monday.

Coronavirus shows up at more Manatee County schools

The School District of Manatee County has now reported 70 COVID-19 cases and 878 related quarantines since the start of classes last month.

Bayshore High School reported its first case this week, while an elementary school made its second appearance on the district’s COVID-19 dashboard, located at www.manateeschools.net. There was just one exposure between the two cases, according to the district’s update on Monday afternoon.

Bayshore High, 5401 34th St. W. in Bradenton, reported one exposure to a student who tested positive for COVID-19.

The term “exposure” describes close and prolonged contact with an infected person (less than six feet of separation for at least 15 minutes), and it requires the exposed student or employee to quarantine for 14 days.

McNeal Elementary School, 6325 Lorraine Road, Bradenton, made its second appearance with one infected student and no exposures. Between the case reported on Monday and the original case reported on Sep. 18, there has yet to be an exposure to the confirmed cases at McNeal Elementary, district records show.

As COVID-19 has ravaged Manatee County and employers have shedded jobs, food security has become a bigger issue for many residents.
