Nominations invited for fifth annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership
Even though Robert P. Bartz, president of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce for nearly 35 years, died in 2017 at the age of 65, his legacy lives on through the people he helped, the projects he touched, and the annual award that bears his name.
The Manatee Chamber of Commence is seeking nominations for the fifth annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership that will be presented at the Chamber’s 59th annual dinner Jan. 27.
“Honoring the commitment and leadership of others was a hallmark of Bob Bartz’s tenure as president of the Manatee Chamber. He was a very special kind of leader and we will continue to use his example to inspire and recognize those who are serving our community,” the chamber said in a statement requesting nominations.
The first four recipients have been a diverse group, but all have one characteristic in common: a record of strong community service beyond the confines of their workplace.
Last year’s recipients, John and Amanda Horne, are community activists and owners of four Anna Maria Oyster Bar restaurants. They are the first husband-and-wife team to share the honor.
Among their passions: Dive into Reading, Pace Center for Girls and veterans. In 2014, the Hornes treated 84 World War II vets to lunch to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy.
In 2020, Bob “Buzz” Turner, former publisher of the Bradenton Herald, received the award.
Turner was cited for his economic development work and his support of local nonprofits and of the University of South Florida.
“That’s what Bob Bartz was all about, giving back to the community. Bob Turner is so deserving of this award,” Ernie Withers, who was the incoming chairman of the Chamber board at that time, said. “I’ve known him since 1980. We are very fortunate to have him in this community, still serving.”
Ron Allen, president of NDC Construction Company, NDC Development Company and NDC Realty, was the second recipient of the Bartz award. He was cited for his community support touching more than 60 local organizations. He is a past chairman of the Manatee Chamber and a graduate of Leadership Manatee and Leadership Florida.
Cliff Walters was the inaugural recipient of the Bartz award.
Walters is a past chairman of the Manatee Chamber and past trustee member of the Manatee Chamber Foundation. He is a principal partner with the Blalock Walters law firm.
Described as a leader, role model, mentor, true professional and compassionate family man, Walters’ leadership profoundly influenced public policy, nonprofits, businesses and philanthropy, according to his award recommendation.
