Focus on Manatee: Plenty to be thankful for as 2017 comes to an end
As we approach the holidays, I am reminded of how happy I am that my way of “walking in a winter wonderland” is on the white, sandy stuff on Anna Maria Island.
Our community is beginning to enjoy an influx of winter visitors and seasonal residents. It’s an economic boost that supports thousands of jobs while attracting businesses and amenities that full-time visitors get to enjoy year-round.
We live, work and play in paradise.
Year-end stats for 2016 saw an increase in tourism in Manatee County of 6 percent over 2015. Before the destructive hurricane season hit, Florida’s 2017 tourism numbers were ahead of 2016, and indications are that the state’s year-end numbers still could surpass last year’s.
Three recent events that put our region on the national and international stage were the 2017 World Rowing Championships at Benderson Park, the Bradenton Blues Festival on the Riverwalk, and the Nike Under-17 International Friendlies at Premier Sports Campus.
If you meet someone in the coming months who is visiting our area, say thank you and invite them to come back again soon.
Another boost to our local economy and job creation would be for each of us to think local. I encourage you to consistently shop local for products and services. It can have a huge impact, particularly this time of year.
The Manatee Chamber can serve as a useful link to finding businesses. Stop by our downtown Bradenton or Lakewood Ranch offices, use our website and online business directory at manateechamber.com, or call us for a referral.
This is also the time of year when a multitude of local non-profits are working hard to make things better for those who are struggling in our community, particularly children. Whether it’s donating to a toy, clothing or food drive, giving to benefit veterans services, mental health counseling, or literacy resources, the Manatee Chamber encourages year-end support of non-profit organizations and their critical missions.
Finally, the holidays give focus to the things most important to us. My list includes family, friends, health and meaningful work.
I am thankful that Manatee County is full of dedicated leaders who work together to seize opportunities and address challenges. It’s a great place to call home.
I wish you happy holidays and a healthy, prosperous new year.
