FHP investigates Wal-Mart crash
An 86-year-old woman who accidentally sped from one parking lot to another caused a serious crash in the parking lot of an Osprey Walmart on Monday morning.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, around 8:46 a.m., the woman “began to rapidly accelerate” her 2007 Toyota Camry from the U.S. Post Office across the street, crossed Bay Acers Avenue and entered the Walmart parking lot after striking a curb. Her vehicle continued traveling in that direction, hitting another curb and then a second vehicle.
The woman’s car rolled over twice, also striking a light pole, and landed in an upright position. Her car made contact with a third vehicle’s rear end, as well, deputies said.
She was charged with careless driving and sustained serious injuries. The 68-year-old driver of the first car she struck was seriously injured as well. Both drivers were taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
