Sheriff’s deputy killed in crash
A Manatee County Sheriff’s Office corrections deputy was killed in a crash in Palmetto on Thursday morning.
Shaun Feverston, 28, was on his way home from work when the crash occurred, said sheriff’s office spokesman Dave Bristow.
“Everybody’s kind of walking around in a daze,” Bristow said. “It’s the worst possible thing.”
Feverston, a four-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was part of a family of sheriff’s office employees. His brother, Bristow said, is a patrol deputy and his father works as the head of the fingerprint unit.
“MSO lost one of our own today as Corrections Deputy Shaun Feverston was killed in traffic crash. Thoughts and prayers to Shaun’s family,” read a tweet from the sheriff’s office, accompanied by a photo of Feverston.
The crash occurred around 7:10 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of 36th Avenue East (Bud Rhoden Road) and Moccasin Wallow Road, according to Florida Highway reports.
A 2013 Ford F250 pulling a trailer, driven by a 59-year-old Palmetto man, was traveling west on Moccasin Wallow Road near the intersection with Bud Rhoden Road when the driver turned left into the path of Feverston’s 2014 Jeep Wrangler, according to FHP.
The front of the truck struck the front of the Jeep, and the impact caused Feverston’s Jeep to overturn in the intersection, according to FHP. Feverston was not wearing his seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A roadblock was reported for several hours at the intersection where the crash occurred.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to Manatee Memorial for treatment. He was charged with violation of right of way, turning left in front of traffic, according to FHP reports.
