Woman dies after suffering medical episode while trying to board jet ski

A 51-year-old Georgia woman died over the weekend after suffering a medical episode while trying to get onto a jet ski at the Coquina Beach boat ramp.

Marsha A. Mincey, 51, suffered a medical issue and fell attempting to get onto a jet ski in the boat ramp on the south side of Coquina Beach, according to Manatee County Marine Rescue Chief Joe Westerman. Lifeguards responded to the call, which was reported as a drowning, and began CPR.

Mincey was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where she died as a result of the medical episode.

Over the weekend and into the Fourth of July holiday there were four near drownings reported — all on Tuesday, with three occurring on Coquina Beach and one on Manatee Public Beach. Three of the near drowning victims were taken to local hospitals.

As of Tuesday evening, two of the victims were set to be released from the hospital and a third was being kept overnight for observation, according to Marine Rescue Lt. Collin Schmidt.

Marine rescue received two calls reporting someone drowning around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday that were unfounded, Westerman said. Other issues that lifeguards dealt with on the crowded beaches were lost children, jellyfish stings, stingray stings and two fires.
