Pregnant woman struck by lightning
A pregnant woman in Fort Myers was struck by lightning Thursday afternoon, according to the News-Press.
The woman, who was not identified, was found on the ground in the Whispering Palms gated community after lightning struck her around 4:30 p.m., the News-Press reported, and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.
As of Friday morning she remained in the intensive care unit, Lt. Jay Rodriguez with the Fort Myers Police Department told the Bradenton Herald in an email.
“We are praying for the best for mother and child,” Rodriguez wrote.
According to the National Weather Service, there have been two lightning-related fatalities in Florida so far this year. On May 17, 46-year-old Fort Pierce resident Guadalupe Salinas was on a construction site in Jensen Beach when he was struck. Most recently, on Tuesday, a 34-year-old construction worker was killed by a lightning strike while laying rebar in Pembroke Pines.
