Rescue mission changes to recovery after a vehicle went into the water near Sarasota
Rescue efforts have transitioned to recovery after a vehicle reportedly drove into waters near Venice, according the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident reportedly occurred on the South Jetty in Venice on Monday, with reports of people inside the vehicle, according to Bay News 9. Officials said in a release the call reporting that a vehicle drove off the jetty into the water first came in around 4:21 p.m.
Deputies from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene, according to Bay News 9. The sheriff’s office tweeted around 6 p.m. Monday that the rescue efforts have turned to recovery.
A nearby member of the sheriff’s office marine unit and Coast Guard members tried to rescue those inside the vehicle, but were unsuccessful, according to Bay News 9.
Officials are now waiting for the tide to change enough to allow for them to locate and recover the vehicle, according to Bay News 9.
The sheriff’s office was using lift bags to attempt to bring the vehicle to the surface of the water around 7:44 p.m., according to a tweet from the department.
