Halfacre awarded contract for $7 million Mercedes Medical facility

Halfacre Construction was awarded a contract to construct the new 54,667-square-foot building at Lakewood Ranch for Mercedes Medical, a privately held, national laboratory products distribution company.

Mercedes Medical will be the first life science-related company to locate in the CORE campus at Lakewood Ranch. CORE is an acronym for Collaboration Opportunities for Research and Exploration.

Ground was broken for the project Jan. 11.

Mercedes Medical was founded in 1991 and moved to the Bradenton-Sarasota area in 1993. The company has outgrown its space in two buildings at 7590 Commerce Court near Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.

With about 65 employees, Mercedes Medical hopes to grow its workforce to about 120, Alex Miller, chief operating officer, previously said.

“We have been in this facility about 12 years. We researched our options for about a year. Interest rates are still low and we decided this is a good time to build. This is exactly what we need,” Miller told the Bradenton Herald in 2017.

The new 28-foot tilt-wall building at 12210 Rangeland Parkway will incorporate an industrial vibe, with exposed concrete walls, steel and mechanical systems. The two-story structure will contain high-level executive office space and an air-conditioned warehouse and distribution facility.

Halfacre Construction Company is acting as the construction manager while Flad Architects and Stantec are serving as the design team for the more than $7 million project. The new headquarters is slated for completion in fall 2018.
