Handy Bus system deserves more attention

I wonder how many of our citizens realize that, in compliance with federal laws, Manatee County has a special para-transit system locally known as the “Handy Bus.” This service is mandated by the American Disability Act so that those who are unable to ride the regular bus service or unable to drive, can have access to transportation.

This service is woefully underfunded and does not have enough bus drivers. This is a lifesaver for those who need to get to doctor visits, grocery shop and other essential trips.

Our county commissioners are aware of it. This service is coordinated through the Metropolitan Planning Organization, which holds meetings about every three months. As a member of that board, I would like to say that there has been one county commissioner who has really taken an interest in this and attends the meetings: Carol Whitmore.

She is not only working in the interest of those of us less fortunate, but she is compassionate and does her best to be proactive on our behalf. I, for one, will remember this during election time.
