Video shows student and substitute teacher brawling in class at Miami Central High

A teenager could be facing criminal charges after police say she attacked a substitute teacher at Miami Central Senior High School in the middle of class.

A video circulating on social media shows the female student and teacher, who has short hair, fighting inside a classroom on Monday. The student is throwing punches and eventually traps the sub against the desk.

The female teacher, who is pulling on the student’s long hair, puts her in a headlock and tries to pin her against the desk. She later loses her grip and is thrown to the ground.

The student body-slams her but is pushed off by a male student. The substitute teacher then pins her on the floor.

The video shows other students inside the class. Some are shouting, “Oh! Oh!” Others are laughing and recording the chaos on their phones.

The video does not show how the fight started.

Miami-Dade Public Schools says the fight happened Monday at Miami Central Senior High School, 1781 NW 95th St., between the substitute teacher and a student who was not supposed to be in the class.

“All indicators point to the student having been the aggressor,” said Daisy Gonzalez-Diego, chief communications officer for MDCPS, in an emailed statement Tuesday.

The district did not identify the teacher or disclose the age of the student. She is in 10th grade.

“This is a regrettable and isolated incident between a student and a teacher, who otherwise maintained an amicable relationship. The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department continues to investigate this unfortunate matter,” Gonzalez-Diego said. “It is evident the employee used great restraint in her attempts to de-escalate the situation.”

The district says the student will be disciplined according to the Code of Student Conduct and might face criminal charges.
