A vehicle being pursued by police flew over a cliff and crashed onto the beach below, gravely injuring the driver, California authorities reported.

The pursuit began when an officer saw a vehicle strike a city fence at about 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, Carlsbad police said in a news release.

The driver fled recklessly and refused to stop, starting a chase, police said.

Shortly after the officer stopped the pursuit, the driver accelerated and flew off a cliff, crashing onto the beach below, police said.

The driver suffered life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive, police said.

An investigation into the crash continues. Police have not found alcohol or drugs to be factors.

Detectives ask that anyone with information call 442-339-2115.

Carlsbad is about a 35-mile drive north from San Diego.
