A kitten with a heart murmur needed a home — then came an adoption that was “meant to be.”
“Our hearts melted when Curie’s adopter told us why this kitten was the one,” a North Carolina animal shelter wrote Oct. 9 on Facebook. “Curie was born with a heart murmur, and her new mom has one too.”
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Wake County shared the joyful update after Curie arrived as a newborn. She landed at the shelter with her mom and three littermates when she was transferred from a rescue in June.
“Curie and her siblings were newborns — just two days old — which is a vulnerable state,” SPCA spokesperson Samantha Ranlet told McClatchy News in an email. “So the family needed the help of a trained foster home to look over them and help them as the mom cat raised her kittens.”
The Raleigh-area shelter said Curie, now about 3 months old, is a “friendly and affectionate” kitten.
A veterinarian believes a congenital heart defect led to her heart murmur, which VCA Animal Hospitals defines as an unusual heart sound due to “turbulent” blood flow. Curie isn’t expected to face heart issues from her condition.
“She grew up to be a very bouncy, playful little lady, and no amount of attention is too much,” Ranlet wrote. “And she’s quick to meow to let you know she’d like to go back to being the center of your universe. She’s very curious as well — she’s a tiny kitten in a big world, but she’s eager to explore everything new under the sun.”
Then it came time for Curie to start her next chapter. When the kitten was adopted, shelter workers couldn’t help but share photos of her with her new owner. They also were touched by the “special connection” the two share.
“Our hope for every pet that leaves through our doors is that they’ll be cherished, loved, and understood,” Ranlet wrote. “Knowing Curie and her new mom can relate to each other in this special way lets us know that they will share a lot of love together.”
The shelter didn’t immediately share whether Curie’s feline mother, Minou, or her littermates — Carson, Elion and Lovelace — have been adopted.
