3 kittens ‘abandoned’ outside shelter. Then came good news for Snap, Crackle and Pop

Three kittens were found “abandoned” — then Snap, Crackle and Pop all got new homes.

A North Carolina animal shelter shared the good news after one of the kittens, Pop, was diagnosed with a leg condition. She underwent physical therapy before she started walking normally.

“We were thrilled to see the big smiles on the faces of Pop’s new family and to know that all of our foster and medical team’s hard work and care had led to that happy moment,” Morgan Freese, lead adoption counselor for the Asheville Humane Society, told McClatchy News in a Sept. 13 email.

The heartwarming adoptions came after Snap, Crackle and Pop were left in front of another animal shelter earlier this year. The cats — given the same names as the mascots for Rice Krispies cereal — were “infested with fleas” but otherwise seemed OK, the humane society wrote Sept. 10 on Facebook.

“However, as these 10 day old babies started to gain mobility, it became apparent that Pop was struggling to get (her) legs under (her),” the shelter wrote.

Pop was diagnosed with Swimmer Syndrome, a condition “identified by a kitten having a ‘frog-like’ posture with its hips jutting out and its legs being splayed.” She started a “rigorous” physical therapy routine to stretch out her tiny legs.

Pop didn’t have a severe case and no longer has symptoms. The kitten, now about 3 months old, got another dose of luck when she was adopted in August. Her siblings also settled into other homes, marking the start of a new chapter.

The littermates’ mom wasn’t believed to have been with them outside the animal shelter and was never at the humane society, Caroline Dougherty, senior manager of communications and marketing, said in an email.
