Teen looking for place to take homecoming pictures is shot, cops say. Councilman arrested
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the face while trying to secure a location to take homecoming pictures, Colorado officers said.
The teen and his friend went to a home to try and ask the owner if they could use the property for homecoming pictures, according to a Sept. 11 news release by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The boys jumped the home’s gate in order to talk to the homeowner and get permission to use the land, officers said.
They couldn’t find the owner, so they walked around the property to continue searching, officers said.
They couldn’t find the homeowner and went back to their car to write a note asking to use the property, deputies said.
That’s when 38-year-old Mountain View Councilman Brent Metz pulled up in his truck, got out and fired a round through the boys’ car windshield, officers said.
Metz’s girlfriend had called him and police to report the trespassers, deputies said.
When police arrived, they found the teen “bleeding heavily” and his friend using a T-shirt to apply pressure to the area, officers said.
Police found the gun used by Metz in his truck, officers said.
“There’s nothing about this that appears to be malicious, with any intent to commit crimes when they jumped over that fence and went to contact that homeowner. It doesn’t exist as far as we can tell. So likely not going to be charging these kids with trespassing,” Jacki Kelley, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, told KDVR.
McClatchy News reached out to the town of Mountain View for a comment on Sept. 12 and was awaiting a response.
Metz was arrested and booked on charges of assault, menacing, illegally discharging a firearm and reckless endangerment, officers said.
Jefferson County is about a 30-mile drive southwest of Denver.
