Bagged salad recalled from Publix and other stores in 11 states

A packaging error led to an 11-state bagged salad recall that’s meant to head off a dangerous food allergy situation.

A run of Fresh Express Southwest Chopped Kit includes the allergens wheat, soy, cashews and coconut. None should be there, so they don’t appear in the ingredient listing. For people with or who serve food to people with those food allergies, that’s a problem that can run from mild to fatal.

The recall notice said, “Fresh Express learned that, during a single production run, incorrect condiment packets were placed into Southwest Chopped Kit bags and, as a result, the allergens wheat, soy, cashews, and coconut are not properly declared.”

Publix announced the recall Friday, the same day it was posted to the FDA website.

This covers 11.5-ounce bags of Fresh Express Southwest Chopped Salad Kit, product codes G163B10A and G163B10B, use by June 29. The bags went to Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Returns can be made to the store of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone with questions can call Fresh Express at 800-242-5472.
