Manatee County authorities arrest wounded 27-year-old suspect in fatal home invasion, shootout in Bradenton

A suspect was arrested late Friday in a home invasion-turned-shootout that left one suspect dead and one resident injured, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Manatee County detectives arrested Courtney Lawrence, 27, and charged him late Friday with murder and armed home invasion in connection with the shooting May 4.

Lawrence was shot during the incident and dropped off at the hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.  The investigation continues, sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow said Friday.

The incident began at 10:26 p.m. Wednesday when four or five gunmen stormed into a 38-year-old victim's home in the 700 block of 64th Avenue East in Bradenton and demanded money.

Detectives reported the victim and suspects exchanged gunfire, injuring the resident and Emanuel Johnson, one of the suspects.

Moments later, the victim's wife arrived back from a trip to 7-Eleven with two children to find her husband and Johnson laying on the ground at the entryway to the garage. She was pointing a gun at Johnson when deputies arrived.

Johnson, 27, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

"We do have a better understanding of what happened," Bristow said Friday afternoon.

Investigators have lots of evidence to process from inside and outside the home, he added, since multiple shots were fired.
