Home invasion, shootout in Bradenton leave suspect dead, resident injured
MANATEE -- A home invasion turned shootout left one resident injured and one of the would-be robbers dead, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
The remaining suspects are still at large, said sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow.
"This residence was targeted, we believe, so this wasn't a random incident," Bristow said. "This is something where they came here for a specific purpose."
The suspects are considered dangerous, he added.
At 10:26 p.m. Wednesday, four or five gunmen stormed into the home in the 700 block of 64th Avenue East in Bradenton and demanded money from one of the residents.
An argument ensued and two teens who were also home at the time ran off in fear.
The 38-year-old victim and suspects exchanged gunfire at the entrance of the home's garage, injuring the resident and Emanuel Johnson, one of the suspects, detectives say.
The victim's wife arrived back from a trip to 7-Eleven with two other children to find her husband and Johnson laying on the ground. She was standing with a gun pointed at Johnson when deputies arrived. Johnson, 27, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The resident remains hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries as of Thursday afternoon.
There have been no arrests in the case. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office Homicide Investigative Unit arrived on scene at about midnight to begin their investigation and remained on scene all morning as crime technicians worked to process the scene.
Dozens of evidence markers indicated where the victim and suspects exchanged gunfire in the entryway to the home's garage. It was nearly noon before crime scene technicians finished processing the scene.
Johnson was released from prison Feb. 18, 2014, after serving four years and a month of a five-year sentence for convictions of trafficking in illegal drugs and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His criminal history also includes convictions for felony battery, burglary to a structure and soliciting a prostitute.
