Convicted felon charged with shooting girlfriend in Sarasota
SARASOTA -- A 22-year-old convicted felon was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery after an altercation resulted in his girlfriend being shot, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.
Ja'corey Davis, 22, was arrested at 7 p.m. Monday, according to a report. Deputies responded to the 1900 block of Sanford Circle at approximately 1:25 p.m. Monday for reports of a shooting. When they arrived, the victim was laying on the ground with a gunshot wound. According to the sheriff's office, investigation revealed that when the victim's 20-year-old ex-boyfriend arrived at her residence, Davis fired a loaded gun at the ex-boyfriend but missed him.
According to a release, the victim stepped in between the men to try to separate them and was subsequently shot in the back by Davis. Deputies said the 22-year-old victim was transported to the hospital where she remains in critical condition. Deputies said in the report that the bullet traveled through her body, severing the spinal cord and puncturing her lung.
Deputies charged Davis with the attempted murder of his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend as well as aggravated battery with a firearm for the injury he caused to his girlfriend, the sheriff's office said.
Davis is currently being held at the Sarasota County Jail without bond. Deputies said Davis was released from prison in April 2015 after being sentenced to four years for armed robbery in Manatee County.
The investigation in continuing and additional charges are pending, deputies said.
