Andrew Lee Perry, 42, arrested in Sarasota, is being held without bond

PALMETTO -- Police are not releasing any more details after the suspect in a Jan. 31 slaying in Palmetto was arrested.

Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Andrew Lee Perry, 42, in Sarasota County late Thursday after homicide detectives obtained a warrant charging him with second-degree murder in the death of Collin Mahoney. Perry was transferred Tuesday to Manatee County jail from Sarasota County jail to face the murder charge.

He was held without bond.

Mahoney, 21, was found shot to death Jan. 31 in an abandoned house in the 500 block of 12th Street Drive West in Palmetto.

Detectives do not believe the shooting was random and previously have said they believe Mahoney was killed the previous afternoon not far from where he was found.

On Tuesday morning, Palmetto Police Chief Scott Tyler said he was not prepared to release any more details about the case just yet.

Last month, Tyler revealed detectives had identified a person of interest in the case but Perry's identity was not released at the time. Tyler said detectives were awaiting test results on a significant amount of forensic evidence.

Perry was released from prison in November 2013 after serving about three years and seven months of a four-year, three-month sentence for trafficking in illegal drugs. He was previously released from prison in 2003 after he served nine years and seven months of a 15-year sentence for convictions of armed robbery with a firearm, grand theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Anyone with any information on the case can call the Manatee County Sheriff's Office at 941-747-3011, ext. 2519, the Palmetto Police Department at 941-721-2000 or remain anonymous and call Manatee Crimestoppers at 866-634-TIPS.
