21-year-old man shot to death in Palmetto was targeted, police say
PALMETTO -- Police say a 21-year-old man found dead in a Palmetto home Sunday was targeted, but there are no suspects in his death yet.
Collin Mahoney was found shot to death in a house in the 500 block of 12th Street Drive West in Palmetto at 10:20 a.m. Sunday. Police think he was killed Saturday.
Scott Tyler, Palmetto Police chief, said they have a few persons of interest in Mahoney's death right now, but not a suspect.
"We have a good theory about what happened, but we're not putting it out there yet," Tyler said.
Police said Sunday they thought Mahoney was shot somewhere else and his body was taken to where he was found. Neighbors were complaining about squatters in some of the houses on the street, and when a Palmetto officer checked the house Sunday she discovered the body.
Tyler said Mahoney lived near the house, where his body was found.
"This was targeted," Tyler said. "It's not a threat to the community."
Mahoney has no criminal record with law enforcement in Manatee County. Police said Sunday that there was no evidence that Mahoney was involved in drug or gang activity.
