Driver arrested in fatal hit-and-run that killed Bradenton man, police say

Venice police arrested a man in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a Bradenton pedestrian.

Jacob Rogo, 30, faces a first-degree felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and a third-degree felony charge of driving while his license was revoked, according to the Venice Police Department.

The arrest comes nearly two weeks after a June 26 hit-and-run crash that killed 31-year-old Bradenton resident Aidlier Meyer.

Police said Meyer was crossing the street around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 41 Bypass and East Venice Avenue when he was struck by a white sedan traveling northbound. The driver fled without stopping, and Meyer later died from his injuries, police said.

Investigators identified Rogo as the driver through witness statements, surveillance video, physical evidence and other investigative leads, police said. Detectives later located the suspected vehicle in Sarasota.

“This arrest reflects the dedication of our officers, detectives, partner agencies, and community members who assisted in this investigation,” Venice Police Capt. Louis White said in a statement to social media. “Our thoughts remain with the Meyer’s family as they continue to navigate this unimaginable loss.”

Police said the investigation remains active. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Sarasota County at 941-366-TIPS (8477).
