Bradenton school zone cameras catch lots of speeders, police say. See the numbers
A driver going 67 mph in a Bradenton school zone was among thousands caught by the city’s photo-enforced speed cameras since the new school year began in August, according to police.
Since Manatee County schools resumed Aug. 11, officials say Bradenton’s school zone cameras have issued 3,541 violations — more than 300 each week on average. The Bradenton Police Department shared the update to social media on Monday, reminding drivers to slow down near campuses.
The school zone cameras, introduced during the 2024-25 school year after the state authorized automated speed enforcement, record vehicles and allow police to issue violations for vehicles traveling more than 10 mph over the posted limit.
Violations result in a $100 citation that can be paid online through the city’s website.
Bradenton tickets speeding school zone drivers
Bradenton’s cameras operate 30 minutes before and after school hours, enforcing both the reduced and regular posted speed limits at 10 campuses, including Ballard Elementary, Manatee High and Sugg Middle schools. Speed enforcement pauses when school is not in session, such as after hours, weekends and holidays.
Manatee County Government ended its separate school zone camera program earlier this year after public complaints and controversy, but Bradenton’s cameras remain active.
The county program, like Bradenton’s, used technology from the Maryland-based company RedSpeed.
Last school year, the Bradenton program recorded more than 12,000 violations. The fastest driver at the time was clocked outside Sea Breeze Elementary School going 78 mph in a 25-mph zone, police said.
