As students head back to class next week, new Bradenton Police Department data reveals just how fast drivers were caught speeding in school zones last year.

The city’s cameras, which monitor speeds at 10 campuses, issued more than 12,000 violations during the 2024-25 school year, according to police. Speeding violations that are more than 10 miles over the posted limit result in a $100 citation.

Among the most extreme cases were drivers going more than double the posted speed limit in several zones. The fastest driver was recorded outside Sea Breeze Elementary School, going 78 mph in a 25 mph zone, police said.

The program will remain in effect this year, with ticketing set to resume Monday, the first day of school. Cameras enforce both the reduced school zone limits during arrival and dismissal and the regular posted limits during the rest of the school day, according to police.

Bradenton began using the cameras in November, arguing that the technology has helped reduce speeding in school zones. Unlike the county’s program, which ended earlier this year after public criticism, the city’s cameras will continue operating.
