Boyfriend’s history of domestic violence led to fatal Bradenton stabbing, prosecutors say
A man convicted of stabbing his girlfriend to death in a Bradenton mobile home park will spend the rest of his life in prison after his history of domestic violence escalated to murder.
Orestes Miguel Figueredo-Ortega, 30, received a life sentence after being found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2020 killing of 21-year-old Delmy Teyul Ba, according to court records. Prosecutors say Figueredo-Ortega’s violent behavior toward Teyul Ba had been documented before her death. The now-convicted killer had been arrested in a separate domestic violence incident less than a month before the fatal stabbing.
The sentencing follows a four-day trial in August 2024, presided over by Circuit Judge Teri Dees. Figueredo-Ortega’s attorney has since filed an appeal seeking to overturn the conviction.
An attorney for Figueredo-Ortega did not immediately respond to the Bradenton Herald’s request for comment.
The murder conviction stems from a deadly altercation on Sept. 17, 2020, at the Sunset Village Mobile Home Park in Bradenton. Deputies from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from Figueredo-Ortega, who claimed his girlfriend had stabbed herself.
When deputies arrived at the mobile home park at 3716 14th St. W, they found Teyul Ba dead on the kitchen floor with multiple stab wounds and no weapon in sight. Her toddler was found alone inside the home, and Figueredo-Ortega had already fled, according to an arrest report.
Investigators later obtained security footage from the mobile home park that contradicted Figueredo-Ortega’s timeline. The footage showed him leaving the residence more than an hour before making the 911 call, prosecutors said.
Authorities tracked Figueredo-Ortega to Miami, where he was arrested by Miami-Dade Police and extradited to Manatee County.
Prosecutors said an argument between Figueredo-Ortega and Teyul Ba escalated into violence on the day of the murder. During an interview with detectives, Figueredo-Ortega allegedly claimed Teyul Ba had a knife and that he “had to stab her.”
However, investigators said the confrontation began when Figueredo-Ortega strangled Teyul Ba. After she broke free, he grabbed a knife and stabbed her three times, with the fatal wound piercing her heart and lung, the Bradenton Herald previously reported.
Killer had previous domestic violence arrest
Detectives said this wasn’t the first time Figueredo-Ortega strangled Teyul Ba. During a previous incident in the weeks leading up to the fatal stabbing, court records show Figueredo-Ortega was charged with domestic battery by strangulation in late August 2020 and ordered to have no contact with her.
In that case, detectives say Figueredo-Ortega choked Teyul Ba until her brother was forced to intervene by striking Figueredo-Ortega in the face multiple times to protect his sister.
At the time of the murder, Figueredo-Ortega was out on pre-trial release from the previous arrest, according to court records.
