A possible phone text scam offers a Palmetto PD hoodie for sale, police say. Don’t click it
The Palmetto Police Department is aware of a possible text message scam and warns residents that their cellphones may become infected with a virus if they click on the link.
According to police, many residents have gotten a text promoting a discount on a Palmetto Police Department hoodie, a type of sweatshirt.
The police shared the unauthorized text that was received by Palmetto’s Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant on their Facebook page Wednesday. It read, “Dear Shirley, Palmetto Police Department hoodie 10$ OFF ready to order now” with a link.
Members of the Palmetto Police Department and other city employees also received the text.
Palmetto Police Chief Scott Tyler said he is not sure if the text is a scam or not, but did confirm that the text wasn’t authorized by the city or his department.
“If you click the link, it goes to a marketing site and you can see the hoodie,” he said. “They actually look pretty nice with our badge and a little saying on them, but we didn’t authorize it.”
Police are urging people just to delete the message and not click any links in the text.
Clicking on any part of the message could potentially infect people’s cellphones with a virus.
