Driver caught going highway speed in Bradenton school zone, police say
A driver was caught traveling at highway speed near a Bradenton school during the 2025-26 school year, according to new data released by the Bradenton Police Department.
Police said the driver was recorded traveling southbound on 59th Street West near Moody Elementary School and Sugg Middle School in a 40 mph zone.
The 73 mph reading was the highest speed recorded by Bradenton’s school zone camera program during the school year, according to police data.
In another extreme case, a driver was recorded going 69 mph outside Sea Breeze Elementary School in a 25 mph zone, or 44 mph over the posted speed limit.
Bradenton’s school zone camera program issued 15,866 speeding violations between Aug. 11 and Thursday morning, according to police. More than 3,300 traffic citations were later issued to drivers who failed to respond to the violations.
The cameras monitor speeds at 10 campuses across Bradenton during school zone enforcement hours. Drivers caught going more than 10 mph over the speed limit receive a $100 violation notice.
Some speeds were recorded during active school zone enforcement periods, while others occurred during regular posted speed limits, according to police.
The school speed zone cameras will not operate during summer break, according to police.
