Original Detwiler’s Farm Market store reopening after repairs from Hurricane Ian

A year after it was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ian, the original Detwiler’s Farm Market store at 6000 Palmer Blvd., Sarasota, is scheduled to reopen at 8 a.m. on Sept. 29.

“The Palmer store has always held such a special place in our hearts, and we could not be more excited to reopen,” Detwiler’s founder Henry Detwiler Sr. said in a press release.

“We can’t wait to give our customers our farm market experience and have fun creating a unique atmosphere where you can do your grocery shopping,” he said.

Without the original brick-and-mortar store, Detwiler’s might not have grown into the phenomenon that it has become in the Bradenton-Sarasota area.

Detwiler’s celebrated the 10th anniversary of the opening of the original farm store in 2019.

The store, which measures only about 5,000 square feet, set the pattern for larger Detwiler’s stores to follow with an emphasis on price, freshness and farm-style promotions in every aisle.

The company started in 2002 as a roadside produce stand. It has grown into five brick-and-mortar stores between Palmetto and Venice.

The Detwilers plan to open a sixth store this fall in the 3500 block of 53rd Avenue West. It will be the first Detwiler’s in west Bradenton.

The company has come a long way since the days when Henry and Natalie Detwiler lived in a Myakka City mobile home with their nine children.
