A Sarasota woman died after a crash on U.S. 41 in Manatee County Saturday evening, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The wreck happened at 6:17 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Tallevast Road, near Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.

Troopers say a 72-year-old Sarasota man was driving an SUV south on U.S. 41, and a 71-year-old Sarasota woman was in the passenger’s seat.

At the Tallevast Road intersection, the driver attempted to turn left in front of an oncoming pickup truck, FHP said.

The front of the pickup hit the left side of the SUV and sent it rotating into a traffic light pole, according to crash investigators.

The Sarasota woman was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, where she later died.

The Sarasota man and the driver of the pickup truck, a 30-year-old Venice man, were both seriously injured and required hospital care, FHP said.

The crash remained under investigation on Sunday morning.
