A cold weather shelter will open in Bradenton on Thursday night as Manatee County prepares for what might be its coldest Christmas Day since 2001, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

The Manatee County government announced that its Emergency Management Division has worked with the Salvation Army to offer cold weather shelter space at the Salvation Army at 1204 14th St. W. in Bradenton.

The shelter’s doors will open at 6 p.m.

Normally, the Salvation Army offers overnight accommodations for 60 people. However, in anticipation of the low temperatures, shelter will be provided for an additional 50 people.

The National Weather Service forecasts an Arctic blast of dangerous and life-threatening cold that will blanket much of the Lower 48 over the next few days.

The cold weather may cause issues for those traveling to and from the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

Temperatures in the Bradenton area expected to dip into the 30s at night this weekend and won’t be back close to normal until Tuesday, National Weather Service forecaster Rick Davis told the Bradenton Herald. If the forecast for Christmas holds up, it will be the coldest it’s been on the holiday since 2001 when the temp dropped to 58 degrees.

Manatee County residents in need of shelter should contact the Salvation Army at (941) 748-5110 or the Manatee County Government at (941) 748-4501.
