18-wheeler and Volkswagen crash in Parrish, sending 2 trauma alerts to hospital, FHP says

Two people from Bradenton were airlifted following a crash with an 18-wheeler Wednesday morning in Manatee County.

The crash involving a Volkswagen sedan and a tractor-trailer happened at about 7:20 a.m. near the intersection of Rutland Road and North Rye Road in Parrish.

A 16-year-old Bradenton girl was driving, and a 44-year-old Bradenton woman was in the passenger’s seat, Florida Highway Patrol said in a press release on Wednesday evening.

The 16-year-old was driving north on Rye Road when she drove through a stop sign at the Rutland Road intersection, traffic investigators say. The tractor-trailer hit the left side of the car.

After the impact, both vehicles went off of the road onto a grass shoulder.

According to Senior FHP Trooper Kenneth Watson, both the driver and the passenger in the Volkswagen were taken to Blake Hospital as trauma alerts. Both suffered critical injuries, FHP’s news release said.

The semi-truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
