Congressman Vern Buchanan earned 62% of the vote to win his ninth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
If Republicans take back the House majority, Buchanan’s victory could pave the way for the Longboat Key lawmaker to become the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, which controls tax policy, trade agreements and Social Security.
In a statement provided to the Bradenton Herald on Tuesday night, Buchanan thanked local voters for their support and predicted majority Republican leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I am humbled by the incredible support this evening. It was a big night for Republicans but an even bigger night for America,” Buchanan said. “Now we can begin to reverse the failed economic policies of President Biden and (Speaker of the House) Nancy Pelosi. Securing the border, less federal spending and lower taxes are back on the agenda again.”
Jan Schneider, a Democrat who has led five unsuccessful campaigns against Buchanan, won 38% of the vote in the race to represent Florida’s 16th Congressional District, which includes all of Manatee County and parts of Hillsborough.
In recent months, Buchanan has taken to Twitter to criticize President Joe Biden, condemning the administration’s stance on domestic oil drilling, inflation and the security of the nation’s southern border.
Earlier this year, Buchanan picked up a key endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who described the congressman as a “terrific representative of the people of Florida.”
