More than 22,000 gallons of raw sewage spills in Sarasota — again
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is reporting another significant sewage spill in Sarasota.
In a public notice alert from DEP, state officials say 22,500 gallons of raw sewage spilled near 2400 Martin Luther King Jr. Way Thursday evening after a 12-inch sewer line broke.
DEP says crews were able to recover 18,500 gallons, but 4,000 gallons spilled into a nearby drainage ditch.
“Sampling, clean up and notifications are proceeding per protocol,” the DEP report states. “Staff is working on a root cause analysis to identify the cause of the failure.”
The spill occurred just southeast of the Newton Estates Park and within a residential area.
It’s just the latest in a series of sewage spills in the area. A handful of those spills include:
- On Dec. 3, 100 gallons of sewage spilled in downtown Sarasota.
- On Nov. 30, the state reported 5,000 gallons of sewage spilled near Nathan Benderson Park.
- On July 10, the state reported 36,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the Siesta Key canal.
