Sewage spill stinks up downtown Sarasota

If you were in the area of downtown Sarasota on Sunday you may have smelled something unpleasant in the air.

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 100 gallons of sewage spilled in the area of Seventh Street and Goodrich Avenue, just to the southwest of Gillespie Park.

City crews responded to the spill and discovered that it was caused by a grease blockage in the main sewer line, which caused the sewage to back up and spill.

The blockage was cleared and crews recovered 15 gallons. The remaining spill was covered in lime, washed and vacuumed.

DEP reports that nearby bodies of water will need to be tested.
