Hospital workers face furloughs and other cost-cutting measures at Manatee Memorial

Hospital workers at Manatee Memorial who have been on the front line of the fight against the coronavirus, a pandemic so dangerous that many Americans have been told to stay in their homes, are now also facing furloughs and feeling the pinch of belt tightening.

“During these unprecedented and difficult times associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, Manatee Memorial Hospital has worked hard to ensure the protection of employment through the following options: a reduction in hours with benefits, a redeployment within the organization, or a furlough which will include a retention of company paid benefits including health, vision, dental, and life insurance,” CEO Kevin DiLallo said in a statement.

“At this time, it is necessary that some employees be furloughed. These employees have been informed and are eligible for unemployment benefits subject to current Florida state guidelines. Employees are eligible to seek additional compensation assistance through the recently passed CARES Act. We are committed to our employees and are making every effort to support them during this time of crisis,” he said.

The statement did not say how many hospital staff or what types of jobs were affected by the belt-tightening.

Manatee Memorial Hospital continues to serve as a safety-net hospital in the community, delivering care for individuals experiencing medical emergencies, for time-sensitive conditions, and with severe symptoms resulting from exposure to COVID-19.

“However, for the safety of all patients and staff, and in order to direct limited supplies to current urgent needs, many hospital services, including surgical and elective procedures, as well as screening and diagnostic testing and other appointments, have been temporarily suspended during the pandemic.,” he said.

“Manatee Memorial Hospital would like to thank our employees for their commitment to our patients, their incredible sacrifice, and their dedication to our community and each other,” he said.

Manatee Memorial, as well as Blake Medical Center, and Lakewood Ranch Medical Center have been treating COVID-19 patients. As of Friday morning, 314 persons in Manatee County have tested positive for the coronavirus.
