EAST MANATEE -- A new Aldi will open in Manatee County on May 11.
The grocery store, 4525 53rd Ave. E., will open at 8:45 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This will be Bradenton's second Aldi location, according to a news release.
"As Aldi continues to grow in Bradenton, we are pleased to open this location to help more smart shoppers stretch their dollars even further," Dave Rinaldo, Haines City division vice president for Aldi, said in the release. "As important as price is, there's only one way to attract and keep shoppers: You have to have quality products. When people try our Aldi exclusive brands, they are surprised by the savings and impressed by the quality."
Aldi has more than 1,500 stores in 33 states.
The new store will have a "new look, offering a modern and convenient shopping environment featuring more room for customers' favorite products, inviting colors, high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials -- such as energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting," according to the release.
The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Freedom Boat Club gives 3 boats to New College
VENICE -- Freedom Boat Club, with more than 10,000 members in 21 states and Canada, has given three sailboats to the New College of Florida's Sailing Team and Waterfront Programs. As a member of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association of North America, the New College Sailing Team regularly hosts regattas and competes in major competitions, taking home first place in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta in New Orleans, according to a press release.
Freedom Boat Club's sailboat donations including two Hunters and a Catalina are now part of the college's official sailing fleet and will have multiple uses as part of the school's active waterfront and sailing team programs. The company's Venice headquarters office supports dozens of organizations along the suncoast, where it operates 17 corporate-owned clubs from Bradenton to Marco Island.
"We deeply appreciate the generous gift from Freedom Boat Club President and CEO John Giglio and Freedom Boat Club," New College of Florida President Donal O'Shea said in the release. "And New College's highly competitive sailing team already is putting these boats to good use -- the Catalina 250 was a committee boat in the last regatta New College hosted!"
U.S. markets regain some of last week's losses
NEW YORK -- U.S. stock indexes moved solidly higher Monday afternoon, recovering some of last week's steep declines. Recently battered technology stocks such as Amazon.com and Microsoft all posted gains, helping end a seven-day losing streak in the Nasdaq composite.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 117.52 points, or 0.7 percent, to 17,891.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 16.13 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,081.43 and the Nasdaq rose 42.24 points, or 0.9 percent, to 4,817.59.
Notably, one major technology stock that did not participate in Monday's gains was Apple, which closed down 10 cents, or 0.1 percent, to $93.64. Apple has fallen eight days in a row, and has now lost 16 percent of its value in the last two weeks.
Technology stocks have been an unexpected drag on the market in the last week. Apple reported its first quarterly decline in profits in years, which sent ripples through the stock market. Investors have been moving into safer investments. The Dow Jones utility index, a collection of 15 dividend-paying utility companies, is up more than 14 percent this year.
"There's a risk-off sentiment in the market right now," said David Lebovitz, a global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds.
