Nancy's Bar-B-Q set to open in Lakewood Ranch

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Nancy's Bar-B-Q at 8141 Lakewood Ranch Main St., Unit 104, should be open next week.

Nancy Krohngold, owner of Nancy's Bar-B-Q in downtown Sarasota, said the restaurant needs some finishing touches and final inspections before it can open.

"Nothing goes as fast or as smoothly as you want," Krohngold said.

But she's most concerned about her "largely new" staff and getting them trained before the crowds hit. When the downtown Sarasota restaurant opened, the news spread quickly and crowds tested her staff before they were quite ready. This time she wants to have as soft an opening as possible before fully opening the doors to the public, so she has not set an official opening date, although she hopes to open in the first week of the new year.

New version of Google Glass shows up in FCC filing

Despite being declared dead quite a few times, a new version of the Google Glass headset may be coming soon. Though Google may have stopped selling the $1,500 "Explorer" versions of the device nearly a year ago, it seems that the project overall is alive and well.

Documents showing a new version of the Glass, including images, have been posted to the website of the Federal Communications Commission. In contrast to earlier versions of the smart headset, the new version of Glass appears to be foldable.

The Glass pictured in the FCC's filings has hinges on both sides, indicating that it can be tucked away like a normal pair of glasses when not in use. But there's a lot the FCC filings don't and can't tell us, notably what the price of a new version of Google Glass would be.

Google and its parent company, Alphabet, have indicated that Glass, now a project under the supervision of Nest leader Tony Faddell, will be more focused on the workplace and professional markets in the near-term. Applications for the headset are clear in a few professions -- Google had particularly touted its uses for emergency workers and physicians -- and the company has indicated that it would focus more closely on those uses.

DuPont to cut 1,700 Delaware-based jobs ahead of Dow merger

WILMINGTON, Del. -- DuPont Co. said it will cut about 28 percent of its workforce in its home state of Delaware in early 2016 as the chemical company proceeds with a merger with Dow Chemical Co.

"The effect in Delaware will be significant, reflecting the urgent need to restructure our cost base and, as part of that effort, reduce our corporate overhead costs so that we can remain competitive," DuPont Chief Executive Officer Ed Breen said in a letter to employees. The cuts will affect 1,700 employees out of 6,100 in the state.

The job cuts announced Tuesday are part the plan to reduce the workforce of 63,000 by 10 percent and trim costs by $700 million, Dan Turner, a spokesman at company, said in a telephone interview. That strategy was outlined on Dec. 11, the day that the companies disclosed the merger. Dow and DuPont, two historic giants of U.S. industry, will join as equals in an all-stock deal that's the first step in an effort to create three new businesses.
