Bealls stores' centennial mural paints 'great future'
BRADENTON -- As Bealls Department Store celebrates its 100-year anniversary this year, a mural depicting the Bradenton-based store's first day of business was unveiled Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier, the Manatee County Commission proclaimed March 24, 2015, as Bealls Day after hearing a presentation about the department store's history.
"I'm just grateful to say in 2015 we can all still look forward to a great future, just like Robert Beall did a century ago," said Bill Webster, director of public and government affairs of Beall's at the unveiling on the corner of Old Main Street and Third Avenue West.
The mural depicts Bealls Inc. founder Robert Beall and his first customers when Beall opened his first dry goods store called Dollar Limit in April 1915.
City and county officials, members of the Beall family and the public attended the unveiling of the mural on the side of the building occupied by McCabe's Irish Pub, Classic Ink and Main Street Market.
Bealls CEO Steve Knopik, Chairman Bob Beall and Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston were among the dignitaries who spoke.
Painter John Allinson finished installing the mural Friday on one of the oldest buildings on Old Main Street.
"Bealls to me is the epitome of cultural exchange," Allinson said. "Thank you for allowing me to do this."
