A 2nd Target is coming to Bradenton. Here are new details for the store at old Kmart.
Target, which confirmed in September 2020 that it plans to open a second store in Bradenton, now appears ready to take the next step to make it a reality.
Contractors applied this week with Manatee County Building Services for a permit to build out the interior of a former Kmart as a Target store at 7350 Manatee Ave. W.
In response to a request from the Herald for more information on the planned store, a Target spokesperson released a statement:
“I can confirm Target has plans to open its Bradenton Northwest store later next year. We’re excited to bring an easy, safe and convenient shopping experience to new guests in the Bradenton community with this new Target store.
“Located at 75th Street and Manatee Ave., the store will be approximately 49,000 square feet. As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share — including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date.”
The last Kmart in Manatee County closed at the Manatee Avenue location in 2019, which led to speculation that Target might open a store there.
Currently, the only Target store in Manatee County is at 6150 14th St. W., in Bayshore Gardens.
There is also a Super Target at 101 N. Cattlemen Road in the University Town Center shopping district, just south of the Manatee County line. Sarasota has several other Targets, including at 5350 Fruitville Road and at 8401 S. Tamiami Trail.
The first Target store opened in 1962, and now there are 1,926 stores spread across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
According to Target, its customers have a median age of 40, and come from a household where the median income is approximately $64,000. About 43% have children at home, and about 57% have completed college.
Target confirmed its plans to open a second Bradenton store before COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out.
In addition to stepped up cleaning and disinfection, Target supports getting vaccinated as the best protection against COVID-19.
“We’re continuing to support our communities by partnering with CVS locations within Target stores to offer vaccines to guests and team members,” Target says on its website.
Although the company is headquartered Minneapolis, its leadership has a deep connection with Southwest Florida.
The Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation in October announced that Target Corp. Chairman and CEO Brian Cornell and his wife, Martha Cornell, are donating $10 million to support the creation of a new behavioral health facility at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota. The Cornells have family roots in the Sarasota area.
Their gift will help fund mental health services as the global pandemic and other crises have spotlighted the need to help those facing anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.
