Lakewood Ranch Medical Center named to list of 231 ‘Best Maternity Hospitals’ in the U.S.
Newsweek, in partnership with The Leapfrog Group, this week named Lakewood Ranch Medical Center to their list of Best Maternity Hospitals in the United States.
The list includes 231 hospitals across 36 states. Only five other Florida hospitals made the list: Tampa General, St. Joseph’s Hospital - South in Riverview, Lakeland Regional Medical Center, AdventHealth Wesley Chapel, and AdventHealth Sebring.
The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization that reports on the safety and quality performance of U.S. health care facilities.
To be considered for the list, hospitals had to demonstrate that they meet Leapfrog’s standards for early elective delivery, nulliparous (a woman who has never given birth), term singleton (a single birth), vertex cesarean sections, episiotomy (surgerical cut to aid a difficult birth); newborn bilirubin screening prior to discharge, and appropriate deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis in women undergoing cesarean delivery.
“Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is honored to be named one of the Best Maternity Hospitals by Newsweek and The Leapfrog Group,” hospital CEO, Andy Guz said in a press release. “It is very important to maintain the highest standards of care, especially for expecting mothers in our Women’s Center.”
In June, the medical center announced the start of a $3 million project to renovate its Women’s Center and offer a more spa-like atmosphere and expand access to high-quality maternity care.
The first renovated rooms will be available in September, and the project is expected to be completed by early 2021.
The goal of the project is to provide a peaceful environment for women at every stage of labor, from admission to delivery and postpartum. The lobby will be modernized to offer a welcoming atmosphere to expectant mothers as they arrive.
Johanna Pumphrey, director of the Women’s Center, took note of the 2020 Best Maternity Hospital Award.
“Patient safety and quality of care are the key elements to this recognition. Evidence-based practice, working together as a strong team toward exceeding the national benchmarks in quality and patient safety is our commitment to our patients and families each and every day,” Pumphrey said in the press release.
