Bradenton distillery making and giving away hand sanitizer to fight COVID-19

Loaded Cannon Distillery is now making, and giving away hand sanitizer, a commodity that has been in short supply across the United States during the coronavirus pandemic.

Producers of rum, gin and vodka, Loaded Cannon began donating hand sanitizer to first responders and hospitals, and now wants to share with the general public.

“We want more people to know that we are giving it away for free,” said Loaded Cannon’s Michelle Russell.

The sanitizer, made from rum, comes in containers ranging from two to eight ounces.

“We started to give it away on Friday. We want to help as many people as possible,” she said.

The hand sanitizer is being made to World Health Organization standards with high-proof alcohol, glycerine, aloe vera, and hydrogen peroxide, Steve Milligan, the distillery’s founder, said.

“When this happened, we were able to quickly convert everything over to making high-proof alcohol for hand sanitizer. The alcohol and the hydrogen peroxide does the killing, and the aloe vera and glycerine takes care of the skin,” he said.

“We had had firefighters, state troopers, deputies, and hospice workers stop by to pick up hand sanitizer. It’s a real honor to help these people and to know that you can do something to help in this crisis,” he said.

Motorworks Brewing, 1014 9th St. W., also began making, and giving away, hand sanitizer last week, and is now making sanitizer in coordination with Dark Door Distillery.

“Our biggest problem has been in finding enough small format bottles, said Barry Elwonger, director of sales and marketing.

Due to sanitation issues, however, Elwonger doesn’t want the public donating bottles.
