You don’t need to do it alone. New gyms say you can keep those New Year’s resolutions
People have been making — and breaking — New Year’s resolutions since at least Roman times.
Perennials include 1. Losing weight, and 2. Getting into better shape.
Disappointing as those results often are, resolutions are doable, say fitness experts, especially with a support network.
New to the downtown Bradenton area in 2019 is One Tribe Fitness, 602 Manatee Ave W.
“First of all, walk through the door,” said Jessica Currin, who owns One Tribe Fitness with Rebecca Hovda, of the first step toward healthier living. “Find something that you would like to do. We usually recommend bungee, because it’s fun.”
Currin slipped a bungee harness around her waist, and demonstrated a move she called “the frog.” Diving forward, her hands lightly touch the floor before the bungee pulls her back, and she bounces back onto her feet.
The frog maneuver works the hands, shoulders, legs, chest and core, she said.
Next, she demonstrated flying, worthy of Peter Pan. With arms wide, she stepped forward against the pull of the bungee cord and leaped up, hanging in the air for a second before being pulled back to her starting position.
“This is everybody’s favorite move. It’s great for people with knee injuries. It allows us to land softly. It’s a great cardio workout as well,” Currin said.
One Tribe advocates a fun, balanced approach to fitness, and fostering of camaraderie among those working on their fitness.
“Then we throw in some cross training. We make a strong effort to help people connect with others in the gym,” Currin said, adding that a sense of community — one tribe — helps celebrate and encourage individual progress.
“In the same day, you can hit the treadmills and rowers, bounce in the bungee, get cultural in dance class, tone and lengthen in barre, get gritty in group, spin and sweat in cycle, hit it and quit it in 30 minutes,” according to the One Tribe web site.

Jeff Munafo and Megan Munafo opened D1 Training LWR, 3025 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., in December.
Make fitness a matter for the whole family, Jeff Munafo said.
“It’s a fun way to start the new year,” he said. “We run adult and child classes at the same time. It’s important to the family that we do it together. It helps you feel better about yourself and builds character.”
In a time of youth obsession with gaming devices, fitness offers a healthier alternative to daily life, he said.
Starting your day with a workout increases the metabolic rate, and helps burn calories, said Andrew Shackelford, a coach at D1.
“Weight loss can be summed up in one sentence: burn more calories than your intake,” Munafo said. “The holidays has put it in you. We can help take it out of you.”
D1 offers separate programs for children ages 7-11, 12-14, and 15-18. For adults, D1 offers high-intensity workouts, and muscle building programs.
“D1 is one of the most unique workout facilities out there, bringing people of all ages together in a positive environment,” said Megan Munafo. “Our scholastic program not only focuses on the physical training, but it lays the foundation kids need to grow into confident, hard-working, well-rounded individuals. The adult program is designed to help people of all skill levels achieve their fitness goals – whether you’ve never worked out before, are a high school athlete determined to play college sports, or are a professional or collegiate athlete – the coaches are here supporting you every step of the way.”
D1 Training LWR is in a 6,000-square-feet space, including a mezzanine lounge. It is equipped synthetic turf and weights used by professional and collegiate sports teams.
Founded in 2001 by former NFL player Will Bartholomew and based in Nashville, D1 Training began franchising in 2016. It has 27 locations currently open.
To reach D1 Fitness Lakewood Ranch, turn off Lakewood Ranch Boulevard at Crowder Bros. Ace Hardware onto Gatewood Drive. D1 is located at the rear of Gatewood Corporate Center. Hours are 6 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. The business is closed on Sunday.
